Davenport ISR 2006 Results and Report
Race Report by James Osborn

The initial date for the race (May 20th & 21st) was cancelled due to poor weather predicted. As it turns out, our Contest Director Mart Falarski made the correct decision. With offshore breezes that weekend, we would not have raced at all.

The rescheduled date of June 3rd & 4th worked out great. Though many pilots were not able to rearrange their schedules, we had 29 pilots signed up. 7 pilots did not show, but 22 was still enough for a good race. Conditions permitted FAI max loading from beginning to end on both days. It was a fantastic weekend of racing. The four main contenders dominated from the beginning, Tom Copp, Mickey Crawley, Ron Vann, and Darrell Zaballos. Most of these guys received a 2nd place heat finish only when racing against each other.

Ron touched a few times during racing and eventually crashed in the 8th round ending his chance at a win. Mehrdad Amir came on strong overcoming many earlier poor heat finishes and gave Tom Copp that second dreaded second place heat finish. This led directly to Tom taking third place. Thanks Mehrdad!

This left the two fast guys Darrell Zaballos and Mickey Crawley to fly off for 1st and 2nd place. Take a look at the race results and you can see that MC and DZ dominate the round fast times. Darrell got the contest fast time of 1 minute 47 seconds which is a new Davenport ISR record.

The initial attempt at the fly off was aborted due to radio interference on Darrell's trusted T-Tail Sp1. It was quickly agreed to have a reflight and let Darrell use another plane - a brand new V-Tail Sp1. The race was very close and exciting for a few laps. It seemed like the planes were passing through each other at the turns, really mixing it up.

Then at the base B turn, apparently Mickey turned harder coming under Darrell's plane. There was a contact. Rumor has it that Mickey's tail caught Darrell's wing tip and yanked it forward. The Sp1 performed a sudden violent flat spin and flipped inverted as it headed straight for the judges at base B. Amazinging, Darrell was able to pilot the plane flying inverted over the judges head at high speed into the bushes!

Not only was no one hit or injured, but Darrell's brand new Sp1 came out of the mishap unscathed. Really quite an amazing finsish to a great weekend of racing. Mickey well deserved Top Gun honors. I'm sure Darrell will be back for revenge next year!
