Davenport Unlimited International MoM Slope Race:
The Davenport ISR held on the weekend of May 21st, 2005 was one of the most competitive and exciting events in Davenport history. We started with 32 pilots with winds in excess of 30 knots for both days. Pilots did not have to worry about how much ballast they needed from one round to another because we were FULL UP from morning to late afternoon! Couldn't ask for better conditions. Wind direction wasn't a problem as the winds slowly shifted to WNW and held for both days.
Racing - we got a total of 10 full rounds in over the weekend and flew 120 heats of intense man on man racing. Spectators witnessed some of the best and fastest pilots shred up the course. Many of the races were close from start to finish and offered some of the most exciting RC racing (View some of these races).
Carnage was very high at this year's event as many aggressive pilots flew hard and fast against the highly skilled field. All pilots were not immune to the carnage as many veterans got caught up in some of the most spectacular mid airs we have seen in recent years. By the end of the the event, 13 pilots had dropped out of the competition (View the Carnage).
Race Final Standings -
1st Place: Darrell Zabellos was the man to beat as he won 1st place in 9 of 10 races. His smooth style, patience and experience also enabled him to post the fastest heat in the event at 1:51! Congratulations Darrell Zabellos Davenport ISR's 2005 TOP GUN (See Darrell's 1:51 race).
2nd Place: Joe Wurts flew very fast and consistent at this year's event, winning 8 of 10 races. It was obvious that pilots were gunning for Joe (or Joe was gunning for them?) because they were not afraid to trade paint with him during the races. In true Wurts fashion, he usually got the better of these exchanges and was able to recover and fly through the round. Congratulations Joe Wurts Davenport ISR's 2nd Place Pilot.
3rd Place: Ron Vann and his secret weapon did not disappoint us as he also won 8 of 10 races. It was obvious that Ron was a contender after his first few heats. He was fast and smooth the entire weekend and managed to avoid contact with any pilot during the event although there were a few close calls. Congratulations Ron Vann Davenport ISR's 3rd Place Pilot.
Baskin Award:
Bill Highfeild - Many pilots tried to impress the judges this year, but it was Bill's graceful landing in the launching area in front of (on) the spectators that captured this award. I have a video of this one... Sorry Bill..
